Smith Hulsey & Busey and Smith Gambrell & Russell are sponsoring the 38th annual Georgia/Florida-Hulsey/Gambrell Moot Court Competition on Friday, October 26, 2018 at 9:30 a.m. at the Bryan Simpson United States Courthouse, Court of Appeals Courtroom in Jacksonville, Fla.
The event honors the late Mark Hulsey, a partner with Smith Hulsey & Busey, and E. Smythe Gambrell, a founding partner of Smith Gambrell.
This competition between the University of Georgia and University of Florida Colleges of Law is held annually on the Friday before the Georgia/Florida football game and has become a tradition in the Jacksonville legal community.
The competition replicates an argument before the United States Supreme Court concerning a current, but unresolved issue of Federal constitutional law. The record on appeal for this year’s competition concerns a former tenured employee of a public research university who claims unlawful termination and constitutional violations of his first amendment speech rights and fourteenth amendment due process rights.
The panel of participating judges in this year’s competition are: The Honorable Harvey Schlesinger, Senior United States District Judge — Jacksonville; The Honorable Wm. Terrell Hodges, Senior United States District Judge — Ocala; The Honorable William Moore, United States District Judge ? Savannah; The Honorable Marcia Morales Howard, United States District Judge — Jacksonville; and The Honorable Lisa Godbey Wood, United States District Judge ? Brunswick.
Mr. Gambrell was president of the American Bar Association and the American Bar Foundation. Mr. Hulsey served as president of The Florida Bar and the Jacksonville Bar Association.
