Law Students

The Smith Hulsey & Busey Summer Associate Program is designed to offer 1L and 2L students the benefit of working at a full-service law firm while providing the personal attention more characteristic of a smaller firm.

Assignments

Summer associates will be assigned work from various practice areas to broaden their experience and promote interaction with numerous attorneys across the firm. Whenever possible, summer associates accompany our attorneys on various out-of-office experiences, including trials, hearings, depositions, arbitrations, closings, client meetings and seminar presentations. We also encourage summer associates to work on pro bono projects.
Summer associates are assigned multiple projects to help them develop the case management skills. The summer program coordinator tracks each summer associate’s workload to ensure an appropriate balance.

Each summer associate has two mentors (one partner and one associate), who provide personalized guidance throughout the summer. Mentors are assigned based on the summer associate’s areas of interest and assist with summer projects and providing them firsthand guidance on the general practice of law.

Social Events

It is important that we get to know our summer associates not just within the office environment but also in more informal settings. The firm offers a wide variety of educational programs and social events throughout the summer. Our most popular events include a dinner cruise on the St. Johns River, an Associates BBQ event, a night of baseball with the Jumbo Shrimp, and welcome breakfasts and receptions.

Feedback

We meet with each summer associate to discuss the quality of their performance and their overall experience at the firm. Supervising attorneys regularly provide informal feedback throughout each assignment and submit a formal evaluation form once an assignment is completed.
