Firm Working with Center for Justice & Accountability for International Restitution Case

The firm, working with Chadbourne & Park of New York City and the Center for Justice & Accountability of San Francisco, is serving as counsel for Joan Jara, the widow of slain Chilean singer-songwriter Victor Jara.

The firm has filed a complaint in the United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida on behalf of Ms. Jara and her two daughters pursuant to the United States Torture Victim Protection Act and the Alien Torture Statute.

The complaint alleges that a Chilean Army officer, Pedro Pablo Barrientos Nunez, directed her husband’s torture and participated in his murder during Agusto Pinochet’s 1973 coup, and is now living as a U.S. citizen in Florida. The complaint seeks punitive damages.

Victor Jara was a popular singer, songwriter and political activist in Chile and was executed in the national soccer stadium on the fifth day of Pinochet’s coup that began on Sept. 11, 1973.
