Jacksonville Magazine has named Smith Hulsey & Busey among its “Companies with Heart” for 2020. The magazine recognizes local businesses that contribute to nonprofits and give their employees the time and opportunities to improve the communities where they work and live.
In 2019, Smith Hulsey & Busey devoted over 1,000 hours of community service to the Jacksonville community. Through volunteerism and leadership positions, members of the firm are involved in nearly three dozen charities, nonprofits and civic organizations.
“Improving our community is important to our firm,” said Steve Busey, chairman of Smith Hulsey & Busey. “We are proud to call the First Coast our home and to make it a better place to work and live.”
Investing in youth and education
Smith Hulsey & Busey has been a long-time supporter of the Episcopal Children’s Services, Inc., a recognized leader in early childhood education serving more than 27,000 disadvantaged children and their families throughout Northeast Florida. In 2019, the firm made its annual holiday donation to the organization in honor of clients and friends.
The firm has also been an ardent supporter of the Spring for the Arts initiative, Jacksonville’s premier event to support arts education through the Cathedral Arts Project. The Cathedral Arts Project mission is to enrich the quality of life in Northeast Florida through unleashing the creative spirit of young people.
A focus on healthcare and wellness for all
Given its statewide healthcare practice, Smith Hulsey & Busey is very involved with many healthcare organizations, including participation at Wolfson Children’s Hospital by volunteering time, energy and gifts to support the children within the hospital. The firm helped Wolfson reach their goal to give every child who enters the hospital a toy or game for its 2019 “Christmas in July” drive.
In addition, the firm is represented on The Women’s Board of Wolfson Children’s Hospital , which works to raise public awareness and funds to help expand the pediatric behavioral health unit at the hospital.
The firm also supports Wolfson’s Patrons of the Hearts, which brings children with complex congenital heart conditions from underdeveloped countries to Wolfson Children’s Hospital for medical treatment. Patrons provide life-changing medical aid to as many as 10 children per year. Patients have been flown to Jacksonville for cardiovascular care from as far away as Afghanistan, Morocco, Zimbabwe, China and Grenada.
Smith Hulsey & Busey attorneys also serve on the Board of Directors and Development Council for Baptist Medical Center Jacksonville, a faith-based, mission-driven system in Northeast Florida.
The firm helps support the many unique community resources Baptist Hospital offers. One area of assistance is helping the Development Council in its focus on the Baptist Health Structural Heart Program, a collaborative team of interventional cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting the valves and other vital structures of the heart.
Providing pro bono legal services
Smith Hulsey & Busey also understands the value of providing pro bono legal services to community members in need.
Each year Smith Hulsey & Busey partners with Jacksonville Area Legal Aid (JALA) to staff the Estate Planning Intake Night. Our attorneys devote their time to advise clients on probate issues, will creation and advance directives. JALA is a non-profit organization that provides high-quality legal assistance to low-income residents and special needs groups in the area.
The firm also invests time and effort with the Pro Bono Project, a joint effort between the Christian Legal Society, JALA and City Rescue Mission, offering legal assistance and education to those in the Life Builders recovery program, most of whom are battling drug and alcohol dependencies.
