Smith Hulsey & Busey is pleased to welcome Joshua DeBarba as an associate. He joins the firm’s Mergers & Acquisitions and Corporate, Securities and Business Law practice groups.
Prior to joining Smith Hulsey & Busey, DeBarba was Assistant General Counsel for Black Diamond Capital Management, an asset management firm with more than $11 billion in assets under management across private equity funds, collateralized loan obligations and a hedge fund.
DeBarba began his career at an Am Law 50 law firm in New York City as an associate in the firm’s mergers and acquisitions group, assisting in more than $5 billion worth of M&A deals. He is also a former associate for an Am Law 100 firm, where he was part of the firm’s emerging companies group, representing startups at various life cycle stages.
“We are excited to welcome Josh to the firm,” said SHB chairman Steve Busey. “His insights as a former in-house counsel for a capital management company, paired with his previous corporate transactional experience, will greatly benefit both the firm and our clients.”
DeBarba earned his J.D. from Columbia Law School and his Master’s in Professional Accounting from the University of Texas at Austin. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in History from Cornell University.
“The combination of this specific work and Smith Hulsey being a smaller firm with a tight-knit culture is exactly what I was looking for,” DeBarba said. “I am thrilled for the next step in my career to be at a firm where I can practice the work that I love.”
